Small business SEO

Small business SEO, without the package that hides the hours.

Most small business SEO is sold as a monthly bundle where you cannot see what you bought. This is sold as hours, at a published rate, against a roadmap you agreed. Four a month is the minimum that does anything, and if your situation does not warrant it we will say so on the first call.

From £380 a monthNo account managerTold plainly when to spend nothing

Straight answer

The cheap package is the expensive option.

A small business budget cannot absorb waste, which is exactly why the bundled monthly package is the wrong shape for it. Once the money has been through an account manager, a reporting tool and a content quota, very little of it reaches your website.

What the cheap package buys

  • An automated audit PDF nobody acts on
  • Four blog posts a month on topics nobody searches
  • Directory submissions bought in bulk
  • A ranking report for terms chosen because they were winnable
  • An account manager relaying your question to someone else

What four senior hours buy

  • The actual reason the pages are not indexed, found and fixed
  • A Google Business Profile completed properly, once
  • The two or three pages that could rank, rewritten to deserve it
  • Core Web Vitals measured on real phones, not a lab score
  • A direct line to the person doing the work

Said plainly

You will read that anything under £1,000 a month cannot buy real SEO. For a bundled agency package that is broadly fair, because of how little of it survives the overhead. It is not the same claim as four senior hours spent directly on your site. What is true either way is that a budget spread too thin does nothing at all, so if yours is small, concentrate it.

Scope

What small business SEO covers here.

Roughly in the order it tends to pay back when the budget is finite.

Find the actual bottleneck

Before anything is bought, what is genuinely holding the site back. Frequently it is indexation or a rebuild that lost redirects, and frequently it is not the thing you were told to worry about.

Local visibility

Profile completeness, categories, consistent details across the citations that carry weight, and a review process that asks real customers at the right moment rather than everyone at once.

The pages that could rank

Usually two or three, not thirty. Which searches you can realistically win, and what those pages have to answer to deserve the position rather than describe your company.

Speed on real devices

Measured in the field rather than in a lab, because a small business site is usually read on a mid-range phone on mobile data, which is not the machine the score was generated on.

Tracking that tells the truth

Enough measurement to know whether the money worked, and not one tag more. Most small sites are carrying analytics they never read and it costs them load time.

What you can do yourself

The parts an owner can genuinely handle, written down so you keep the hours for work that needs a specialist. Reviews, profile updates and photographs do not need to be billed.

Cost

What it costs.

The £95 blended hourly rate, or a monthly package which is simply those hours multiplied out. Minimum engagement is 4 hours.

Foundation, 4 hours a month

£380/month

The usual starting point for a small business. Enough to hold ground, fix what is actively costing you, and keep the local signals correct.

Growth, 8 hours a month

£760/month

Where there is a roadmap to work through rather than a site to maintain. Page rebuilds, architecture, and copy where it is losing you the search.

One concentrated month

From £380

No retainer. One block of hours spent on the single biggest problem, with the findings written down so you can act on them yourself afterwards.

Time is logged as it is spent and the ledger is open to you, including the hours that went nowhere.

Worth saying

When a small business should not hire us.

These are senior rates and there are common situations where paying them would be a poor decision for a small business.

Nobody searches for what you sell. Some businesses genuinely run on referral and reputation. If there is no search demand, SEO cannot manufacture it, and a paid channel or a partnership will serve you better.

The site is brand new with no traffic. There is nothing to diagnose yet. You need pages worth reading and people who know you exist first.

The job is one afternoon. If a single oversized image is what is slowing you down, whoever already has access can fix it. You do not need a specialist for that and we will say so.

You want volume. Forty product descriptions is a content team's job, and they will do it better and considerably cheaper than a technical specialist will.

A reasonable number of first calls end with us saying you do not need to hire anyone. That is a useful outcome and it costs you nothing.

FAQ

Questions clients actually ask

How much should a small business spend on SEO?

Published UK benchmarks put small business and local SEO at roughly £300 to £2,500 a month. The useful question is not the number, it is whether the number buys enough hours to do anything. Four senior hours a month is a different product to a £300 bundled package spread across a team, an account manager and a reporting tool.

If the budget is genuinely small, spend it on one concentrated month rather than twelve token ones. Thin budgets spread thin achieve nothing, and we would rather say that than take the retainer.

Is SEO worth it for a small business at all?

Sometimes not, and that is worth establishing before you spend anything. If your customers find you by word of mouth and nobody searches for what you sell, SEO is the wrong channel and no amount of technical work changes that.

It is usually worth it when there is real search demand in your area or niche, when the site is already getting some traffic that is converting badly, or when competitors are visibly taking searches you should be winning. The free first look exists to work out which of those you are in.

Do I need local SEO or regular SEO?

If customers come to you or you travel to them, local is where the return is: the map pack, the Google Business Profile, citations and reviews. That is a different job to ranking a page nationally, and for most small businesses it is the one that pays.

If you sell nationally or online, the local layer matters much less and the work moves to the site itself. Plenty of small businesses need both, weighted heavily towards one.

Can I do small business SEO myself?

A good deal of it, yes, and we will tell you which parts. Claiming and completing your Google Business Profile, getting your name, address and phone consistent, and asking real customers for reviews are all things an owner can do properly without paying anyone.

What is harder to do yourself is diagnosis: working out why pages are not indexed, why the site is slow on real phones, or why a rebuild lost you rankings. That is where an hour of specialist time beats a month of guessing.

How long does it take to see results?

Local and profile work can move within weeks, because those signals update quickly. Anything competing on the site itself takes months, because pages have to earn their position and there is no shortcut that survives.

Anybody promising rankings in thirty days is either describing a term nobody searches or planning something that will not hold. We would rather set the expectation properly at the start and be judged against it.
