Plumber and trades SEO

Trades SEO, decided in three map results on a phone.

Somebody with water coming through the ceiling picks from the local pack in under a minute. They do not read your about page or compare quotes. That makes profile completeness, accurate hours, recent reviews and a tappable number worth more than any amount of content, and it makes an unanswered phone the most expensive fault on the list.

Service area setup done properlyNo page per townNo incentivised reviews

Straight answer

Almost none of this is about your website.

For most trades the map pack decides the majority of enquiries, and the website is a supporting act. Money spent on blog posts while the profile sits half configured is money spent in the wrong place.

What trades usually get sold

  • A page for every town within thirty miles
  • Monthly blog posts nobody searches for
  • Directory listings bought in bulk
  • A home address published as a business premises
  • Review widgets asking everyone at the wrong moment
  • A phone number rendered as an image

What decides emergency work

  • A complete, correctly categorised profile
  • Service area declared properly, address hidden
  • Hours that are accurate, including out of hours
  • Recent reviews earned from real customers
  • A tappable number above the fold on a phone
  • Somebody answering it

Said plainly

If your profile is half set up and your phone goes to voicemail during the day, no SEO work will fix your enquiry problem and we will tell you that before taking any money. A reasonable number of first calls with trades end with a list of things to fix that cost nothing.

Scope

What trades SEO covers here.

In the order it pays back for a plumber, electrician or heating engineer.

Service area setup

Address hidden, coverage declared, categories and services correct. Done properly this is the single highest return hour, and it is routinely left half finished after setup.

Prominence signals

Consistent details across the sources that carry weight, and a review process asking real customers at the right moment rather than everyone at once.

Emergency intent

Pages and profile built for someone in a hurry on a phone: the number first, the area covered, the call out reality, and nothing to scroll past.

Honest area coverage

Pages only where you genuinely work and can say something specific. Everywhere else becomes a coverage list rather than a page that risks the domain.

Job type pages

Boiler replacement, bathroom fitting, rewires, emergency call out. Different searches with different urgency and value, which one services page cannot serve.

Accreditation as data

Gas Safe, NICEIC, OFTEC and the rest expressed as machine readable credentials rather than a row of logos with no alt text.

Cost

What it costs.

The £95 blended hourly rate, or a monthly package. Minimum engagement is 4 hours, and for a lot of trades the first four hours are the bulk of the value.

Local setup and audit

From £380

Profile, service area, categories, hours, citations and the site checked together, with a list of what is costing you calls.

Foundation, 4 hours a month

£380/month

Keeping the profile correct, reviews flowing through a real process, and the job type pages maintained.

One concentrated block

From £380

No retainer. Fix the setup once, properly, with the findings written down so you can maintain it yourself.

FAQ

Questions clients actually ask

We have no shopfront. Can we still rank locally?

Yes. Google supports service area businesses, where you hide the address and declare the areas you cover instead. Plenty of trades get this wrong by publishing a home address, which is both a privacy problem and frequently a ranking one.

The trade off is real and worth knowing: service area businesses generally find the map pack harder than businesses with a verified premises, because proximity is doing less work. It is not a reason to invent an address, which is a policy breach that risks suspension.

How much does an emergency search actually decide?

Most of it. Somebody with water coming through a ceiling is choosing from the three map results, on a phone, in under a minute. They are not reading your about page, comparing quotes or scrolling to the blue links.

That makes profile completeness, opening hours accuracy, review recency and whether your number is tappable worth more than any amount of content. It also means an unanswered phone wastes everything above it.

Do reviews really move rankings, or just conversions?

Both, and the local effect is genuine. Review volume, recency and rating feed the prominence signal that decides map pack position, so a business with forty recent reviews generally outranks one with six from three years ago.

What we will not do is generate or incentivise reviews, or ask only the customers who look happy. That breaches Google's policies and risks the profile that your entire local visibility depends on.

Should we build a page for every town we cover?

No. It is the most common thing trades are sold and one of the more reliable ways to damage a domain. Forty pages differing only by place name is a doorway pattern, and the penalty lands on the whole site rather than those pages.

Pages for the areas you genuinely work, differing by real jobs done there and practical detail like call out times, are legitimate. That is usually a handful.

Is Checkatrade enough on its own?

It will bring work, and it will outrank you for generic terms because that is its business. What it will not do is belong to you. The pricing changes, the ranking changes, and your visibility changes with it.

Your own profile and site win on your name, on the areas you actually cover, and on the specific jobs a directory listing cannot describe. Most trades should have both rather than choosing.
