London SEO
London SEO, from a practice with London clients and no London office.
Most of the named work on this site is for London businesses: two public builds and a retained dental practice in the centre. There is no office here and no postcode in the footer, because renting one to look local is exactly the sort of thing we would tell you not to do. What London genuinely changes is the search itself, which is dense enough that the map pack moves by neighbourhood rather than by city.
Straight answer
A citywide ranking number tells you almost nothing here.
London is dense enough that local results reorder over a few miles. A report saying you rank third for a term is describing one point on a map, and it is usually the point where the person running the check was sitting.
What gets reported
- One citywide position for a local query
- A page for every borough, same text throughout
- Citations bought in bulk and never verified
- Local effort on a business that sells nationally
- Head terms nobody realistically wins this year
What actually decides it
- Visibility measured from where customers search
- Area pages only where you genuinely operate
- Consistent details across sources that carry weight
- An honest decision on whether local matters at all
- Specific terms first, contested ones later
On borough pages, said plainly
Thirty-two near identical pages with the place name swapped is a doorway pattern, and the risk lands on the whole domain rather than on those pages alone. We will build area pages where a business genuinely works in those areas and has something different to say about each. Where it does not, the answer is no, and it is worth knowing that before briefing somebody who says yes.
Evidence
The London work, which is public.
Two of these are named because they are live and the owners are happy to be. The third is described rather than named, at the client's request.
Retained
Lamplit London
A full custom design and build for a London directory and editorial site, coded by hand rather than assembled from a page builder, and retained since so the design keeps pace with the content.
Build
London Guide UK
A London listings and guide site taken from an empty WordPress install to a live structured directory, with the plugin stack chosen deliberately and the login and admin hardened.
Private practice
Cosmetic and implant dentistry, central London
A single site practice in one of the most expensive dental markets in the country, with nearly a third of its ranking keywords held in the top three positions on a DR 27 domain.
Scope
What London SEO covers here.
Weighted by what actually moves for a business in a dense market.
Visibility by location
How you rank from the places your customers actually search, rather than one number from one point. In London the difference between two postcodes is frequently the whole story.
Profile and prominence
Categories, services, attributes and a review process that asks real customers at the right moment. Prominence carries more weight here because proximity sorts less.
Honest area pages
Pages for the areas you genuinely serve, differing by the work and the reality rather than by a swapped place name. Usually a handful, not thirty-two.
Local or national, decided
Whether local signals are worth anything to your business at all. For a London company selling nationally the honest answer is often no, and the effort belongs elsewhere.
Multi-site architecture
Several premises on one domain with genuinely distinct pages, or existing separate sites consolidated so they stop competing with each other.
The technical layer
Indexation, speed and schema underneath all of it, because a perfectly configured profile pointing at a slow, badly structured site still loses the enquiry.
FAQ
Questions clients actually ask
Do you have a London office?
No. The practice is remote and works UK hours, and there is no address in London to visit.
What is genuinely London is the client work. Two of the public builds on this site are London businesses, and one of the retained SEO clients is a private dental practice in central London. That is the connection, and it seemed more useful to state it that way than to rent a virtual office and put a postcode in the footer.
Can you rank us for "London" terms?
Sometimes, and it depends heavily on which ones. The broad agency terms in London are among the most contested in UK search, held by firms with a decade of authority, and promising those quickly would be dishonest.
What is winnable is narrower and usually closer to the money: a specific service plus London, a borough or neighbourhood where you genuinely operate, and the map pack for a real premises. That is where we would start and we will tell you which of your targets fall into which category before you spend anything.
What makes London search harder than the rest of the UK?
Density and competition together. Every category has more competitors within a few miles of your customer, so proximity sorts fewer of the results than it does elsewhere and prominence has to do more of the work.
It also means the map pack shifts by neighbourhood rather than by city. Ranking well in Shoreditch tells you very little about how you look to somebody searching from Clapham, which is why a single citywide ranking number is close to meaningless here.
Should we build pages for every London borough?
Only where you genuinely operate, and almost never thirty-two of them. A page per borough with the name swapped is the doorway page pattern, and Google treats it as a signal about the whole domain rather than about that page, so it risks the site to chase searches you were unlikely to win.
Where a business genuinely serves distinct areas, those pages need to differ by more than a place name: the actual work done there, the travel or delivery reality, the local specifics. Fewer and real beats many and templated.
We are a London business but sell nationally. Does local matter?
Less than you might think, and it is worth deciding deliberately rather than defaulting. If customers never come to you and you ship or deliver everywhere, the map pack and local citations are close to irrelevant and the effort belongs in the site itself.
Plenty of London businesses invest in local signals out of habit while the pages that could actually sell nationally sit unimproved.
