AI Overviews are not the traffic apocalypse you were sold.

Every few years search gets an existential threat that ends most sites by Christmas. Featured snippets did it, then voice, then the helpful content update, now AI Overviews. The pattern is always the same: a real change, described in the most terminal terms possible by people who sell the fix. The change is real. The apocalypse is a sales pitch.

A measured take, not a panicWhat actually movedThe calm response

What actually changed

AI Overviews put a generated answer above the results for some queries. For those queries, the person who only wanted the fact gets it without clicking, and the sites that used to catch that click lose it. That is real, it is measurable, and for a certain kind of page it genuinely hurts.

What it does not do is remove clicks from search in general. It removes them from a specific class of query: the ones with a short, factual, uncontested answer. What time is it in Tokyo, how many grams in an ounce, when did a film come out. Those queries were already barely sending clicks, because a featured snippet was already answering most of them. AI Overviews mostly finished a job that snippets started a decade ago.

Which pages are actually exposed

The honest way to think about this is not "will AI Overviews hurt me" but "which of my pages exist only to answer a question a machine can now answer completely". Sort your traffic that way and the picture gets much calmer.

A page that ranks because it briefly defines a term, states a conversion, or lists a simple fact is exposed, because the whole value of the page was the fact and the fact is now in the overview. A page that ranks because it helps someone make a decision, compares real options, carries genuine expertise, or is the thing the person actually needs to do something, is far less exposed, because the overview can summarise it but cannot replace it. If anything, being the source an overview cites sends qualified people your way. That is the ground the generative engine optimisation work is about, and it rewards the same depth classic search has rewarded for years.

The measurement that settles it

Do not argue about this in the abstract. In Search Console, look at the queries that lost clicks and ask, for each cluster, whether the answer is now sitting in an overview. If your losses are concentrated in short factual queries you were never going to convert anyway, you have lost noise. If they are in your commercial and decision queries, that is a different and more serious conversation, and it usually points at a content quality problem the overview merely exposed.

The response that is not panic

The technical foundations do not change. A page that an overview can read, trust and cite is a page that was already crawlable, well structured, and written by someone with standing on the subject. Everything that made a page rank in classic search is what makes it usable to a generative system, which is why the honest version of this work is mostly technical SEO done properly, plus a modest amount of new effort on being extractable and being described correctly.

Where there is genuinely new work, it is measurement. You can no longer see your rank, because a generated answer has no rank, so you sample instead: ask the assistants the questions your customers ask and record how you are described. We wrote up how to run that yourself without hiring anyone, because the honest first step is to find out whether the assistants surface your category at all before spending anything on it. For a lot of businesses, they do not yet, which is a useful and calming thing to learn.

The general lesson

Treat every "this is the end of SEO" headline as a claim to be measured rather than a fact to be feared. The channel keeps changing shape and it keeps sending traffic to sites that are genuinely the best answer. The work is to be that, and to measure honestly which of your pages are, rather than to buy a defence against an apocalypse that the person selling it needs you to believe in.
